TALK TOPIC: The Nature of Connection
I’ve always had a passion for plants. My journey with plant life started with Food Security, where I was the produce manager for the Sonneblom Housegarden Project. A project growing seedlings for the gardens of the poorer community of Montagu, teaching them growing techniques and the importance of seed collection. From there I proceeded to establish my own gourmet vegetable business as wealthy people also need vegetables. My journey led me to become the Herb Coordinator for our town’s Heritage Herb Project, which aims at capturing the indigenous plant knowledge of our town’s locals, as it is an area rich in medicinal plant life. One could say that it is here that I finally discovered my purpose: that energy that causes one’s awakening. In the three and a half years that I led the project, the research I did after hours made me realise that although South African plant life is much revered for its medicinal properties on a global scale, little research has gone into how our indigenous plants can heal on a spiritual level. This year I’ve resigned from the project, pursuing a quest to completely envelop myself in what I call Plant Spirit. I’ve combined my self-gained knowledge, the ancestral pull towards plant spirit, and my love for sharing plant spirit into a space where I heal myself and hopefully can take some credit in the awakening of those who seek to re-establish their connection to Mother Earth.

1. When you’re having a bad day, what do you do to make yourself feel better?
There are two things in this life that bring instant relief to a bad day. A hike in nature and talking to my mother. On days that the mountains seems too far away, I go out into my garden and talk to my plants. In both cases, my secrets are safe, and Plant Spirit provides me with serenity and calm.
2. What has been your greatest passion?
My greatest passion has always been to treat every single person with the greatest respect, thereby creating a world where we acknowledge the love that can change our Earth. The energy that plant spirit has instilled in me, has taken this passion even deeper, and I now know how to combine compassion and the stories of both plant and people to create a world where we learn about one another, thereby bringing understanding and love.
3. What is the number one way we can make a substantial difference?
I use to find the saying “All we need is Love” such a cliché. Yet, that one word, encompasses so much. It means tolerance, respect, understanding, gentleness, even in the face of adversity. When we love, we awaken to Mother Earth’s potential and the infinite understanding that everything, everyone, all of us are one.
4. What personality trait has gotten you in the most trouble?
I think outside of the box, I dare to become excited, and I love presenting ideas to the contrary. In a world where the awakening of people is suppressed, being the weed in a “pristine” garden gets me pulled every time. There is a reason why certain plants are called weeds though. They will rear their heads every time.
5. What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?
As I’m progressing in years, there is a quote by Mahatma Gandhi which resonates with me whenever I doubt myself. “Speak your mind. Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is still the truth”.
6. What gives you purpose in life?
What gives me purpose and the courage to rise and face every day, is that I have the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life every day. A difference comes with a smile, a greeting, kind words, sharing knowledge when conversing, a thank you, a hug, an acknowledgement that today someone or something has come on my path to equip me with another hint of how to build at this jigsaw puzzle called Life.
